Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a common medical complication of pregnancy, is defined as “any degree of glucose intolerance with onset or first recognition during pregnancy”. This condition if not recognized and treated is characterized by a series of foetal and maternal complications. The results of the HAPO Study (Hyperglycaemia and Adverse Pregnancy Ou-tcome), designed to identify universal criteria of GDM diagnosis, has been recently published. The conclusion of the study suggests to utilize for the diagnosis of GDM, a 75 gr. glucose OGTT. In this paper the results of the Italian Consensus on the new criteria of screening and diagnosis of GDM will be reported.
