Background. Analytical quality specifications represent the level of performance required to facilitate clinical decision- making. A growing body of evidence has been collected to demonstrate the need to define quality specifications also in extra-analytical phases of laboratory activity. Methods. A literature review allowed to identify some possible indicators and specifications for the extraanalytical phases of laboratory activity Results. Here we describe present data on proposed quality specifications in extra-analytical phases, namely those derived by the initial efforts of a network of Italian laboratories. Conclusions. The identification and consensus on possible quality specifications in extra-analytical phases is mandatory for improving the appropriate interpretation and utilization of laboratory information.
