Background. Thrombotic disease are serious and costly. Oral anticoagulant therapy lowers the number of thrombotic episodes, and therefore costs can be reduced. Methods. We calculated the full costs to manage OAT in our clinic, and compared them with the costs reported in other centers. Furthermore, we calculated the number and costs of thromboses which are prevented when patients are managed in a specialized service, to have a benchmark with the costs incurred in others forms of managed care. Results. In our clinic, costs to manage OAT are lower than those reported in other studies, and far lower than the costs paid for the care of thromboses. Conclusions. When OAT is managed in specialized centres, the number of thromboses is lower than when OAT is managed otherwise therefore it is more costeffective.
